"Reviving an Aquapolis"

On the back of its decision to host the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, Japan has been debating various challenges and proposals regarding how the world-class city of Tokyo ought to transform itself for the event.
This issue features the thoughts of three opinion leaders, who discuss Tokyo’s origins as a city, its distinctiveness, current state, and the changes expected from hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Obayashi Project, which was conceptualized by OBAYASHI CORPORATION’s technical team, suggests that a city’s unique appeal is formed precisely by passing down historically valuable elements, and on this basis, it attempts to revive a modern version of Tokyo as a waterfront city which was once called the “Venice of the East” as a vision for the post-2020 era.
