On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, "Completion Ceremony for Aigawa Dam" was held at the Aigawa Dam in Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture, hosted by Osaka Prefecture.
Approximately 100 people, including stakeholders and local residents, attended the ceremony to celebrate the completion of the dam. Governor Yoshimura of Osaka Prefecture and Koyari, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, expressed their gratitude to everyone who contributed to the project and emphasized the role of the dam as a key measure for flood management in the Aigawa River basin and their expectations for regional revitalization.
In the commemorative event held in the afternoon for the local community, Mayor Fukuoka of Ibaraki City and General Manager Tanaka of the Osaka Prefecture Aigawa Dam Construction Office expressed their gratitude to the local residents once again.
The Aigawa Dam was constructed in consideration of preserving the rich natural environment, as it was the first dam in Japan not to cut down a new mountain for raw ore collection, but to use materials manufactured at an existing quarry, and a flash discharge system was introduced to improve the downstream river environment and replenish sediment to the river.
Furthermore, the beautifully shaded riprap of the rocks, where filling stones were carefully placed by hand at the bottom of large stone gaps, is known as "Aigawa-dumi", and is beloved by local residents and dam enthusiasts.
The Obayashi JV was able to complete a dam that provides safety and security for people’s lives and is loved by the local community as an urban-suburban dam in harmony with people and nature.
