Obayashi-Dam Innovative Construction Technology
Since the 1950s, Obayashi Corporation has been involved in the construction of various types of dams across Japan, including concrete gravity dams, concrete arch dams, and rockfill dams. Based on that experience and achievements, we are constantly working on the development of new dam construction technologies, aiming for further improvements in productivity and safety, as well as advanced quality control.
Obayashi Corporation is currently constructing the Kawakami dam in Iga City, Mie Prefecture ordered by the Japan Water Agency, Independent Administrative Agency. The Kawakami dam is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 84m (crest elevation: EL.282.0m), crest length of 334m, and volume of 457,570m3, and is scheduled to be completed in 2023. At the site, it is planned to automate construction using cutting-edge technologies such as AI and ICT and proceed with the development and practical application of more than 20 new technologies.
In Japan, where there are many natural disasters, the development of infrastructure structures such as dams is essential. However, many challenges such as the aging of skilled workers, labor shortages due to young people leaving the construction industry, and harsh working conditions have pilled up.
We at Obayashi continue to take on challenges to overcome issues. For the future of dam construction, we are nurturing people, creating technology, and moving forward step by step. We will continue to aim for high-quality dam construction that is friendly to workers, local communities, and the environment.
