Challenge to automatization of dam construction site.

Kawakami Dam JV Construction Office Managing. Engineer.

Mitsuhiro Omata

What are the current situation and issues at the dam construction site?

As a tendency in the overall construction industry, the decrease in the number of skilled laborers has become noticeable. Skilled technology and know-how are also being lost at dam construction sites, raising concerns about a decline in productivity. For the countermeasure for these issues, system development to improve productivity and ensure quality has become an issue.

What is the mission in the construction of Kawakami Dam?

At Kawakami Dam, we are advancing the automation of construction technology (labor saving and efficiency improvement), and the development by concentrating all of Obayashi's efforts to more than 20 technological developments aiming to raise to a practical level. For example, "automation of tower cranes linked to concrete placing systems", "judgment and evaluation of concrete placement joint surface processing using AI", "complete precasting of inspection galleries" etc., new attempts on both hardware and software are made.

Mitsuhiro Omata

Toward the establishment of automatization of the dam construction site.

Obayashi Corporation aims to dramatically improve productivity by establishing “ODICT”, which integrates the dam construction technology it has cultivated up to now with innovative construction technology such as ICT and AI.
Automation of construction machinery does not currently provide automatic control like self-driving cars, and it is still in the testing stage.
For automation, it is necessary to digitize the contents that have been instructed by written instruction or verbal until now. Ambiguous instructions and judgments will not work.
It is extremely difficult to review existing methods and visualize the necessary information.
However, to solve the problems faced by the construction industry, new technologies are proactively used, and next-generation construction technologies are developed, the challenge of automating dam sites positively through trial and error aims to be continued.
