“Digital twin” refers to a mechanism that utilizes sensors and cameras to capture various information from the real world and recreate an identical copy, like a twin, in a digital space.
The manufacturing sector has long utilized this mechanism to conduct simulations, analyses, and optimizations in digital spaces before feeding the results back into physical spaces. Today, advancements in IoT, AI, image analysis, and other technologies are expanding the application of digital twins into a wide range of different fields.
This issue provides an overview of digital twin technology while outlining its future potential. At the same time, the Obayashi Project, which was conceptualized by OBAYASHI CORPORATION’s technical team, envisions new approaches to urban development that utilize digital twins.
