Obayashi Corporation:
Celebrating the First 130 Years

January 2021 marked the 130^th anniversary of Obayashi’s founding. To commemorate this milestone, we have released an online version of our 130-year history, “Obayashi Chronicle 130 1892–2021.”

We would like to express our deep appreciation to our many customers and other stakeholders. It is thanks to their steadfast support and patronage that Obayashi has continued in business for well over a century.

Looking back over the past decade, the global economy has been driven by the rapid economic development of China and the recovery of the U.S. economy. As a result, the business environment in which the Obayashi Group operates has remained strong. Beginning in early 2020, however, the spread of COVID-19 has had a profound impact not only on society and the economy, but also on the very way in which individuals work and conduct their lives. The pandemic has left a sense of uncertainty and anxiety about the future that affects everyone in society.

Given the challenges currently facing the world, the Obayashi Group, which marked its 130^th anniversary this year, has adopted a new brand vision, “MAKE BEYOND: Transcending the Art and Science of Making Things.” This brand vision speaks both within Obayashi and beyond of the kind of company we intend to be. It expresses Obayashi’s determination to build upon manufacturing technologies and knowledge that have been cultivated over the years. In this way, the brand vision reaffirms the significance of the companies of the Obayashi Group. The fact is that, since its establishment, Obayashi has consistently responded to people’s needs by contributing to the development of society. We will continue to extend this vision through the “art and science of making things.”

To keep North America, the United Kingdom, Asia, and Oceania, regions in which the Obayashi Group is actively engaged, up to date, we have produced our company’s history in Chinese (traditional), Thai, Vietnamese, and Indonesian in addition to English. As the company history makes abundantly clear, throughout our long history since 1892, Obayashi has been guided by the Obayashi Three Pledges of “Quality, Value, and Efficiency,” which have remained cornerstones of our business from its inception to the present. Today, we have every confidence in our ability to “MAKE BEYOND.”

It is our hope that this website, created to mark our 130^th anniversary, will lead you to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Obayashi Group.
