Transitioning to a New Corporate Symbol

Former Symbol

The former symbol was established by the founder of Obayashi Corporation, Yoshigoro Obayashi, at the time of the company’s founding in January 1892. Yoshigoro Obayashi took the “yama” part from the “Yamatoya” house of the Hayashi family, the main family branch of the Obayashi family, and assigned it the Japanese character for mountain (山), which is also pronounced as “yama.” He then designed this character based on the pattern of the Obayashi family crest, which features three leaves of a Japanese emperor oak tree within a circle. The reason why the character for mountain was used in place of the word “yama” is that this kanji is filled with our founder’s wish and drive that the company should be built into one that holds an unyielding position in the construction industry—in other words, to be as solid and heavy as Mount Tai. The circular arc additionally symbolizes a lack of obstruction on all sides, along with harmony within the company.

Current Symbol

The current symbol expresses our wish for a rich and fruitful harmony between the earth and its people, along with our desire to create a healthy and robust future while also leaving big dreams to the endless, beautiful horizon and beyond. The lower part, expressed in the shape of an open fan, is an image of a safe and secure earth which nurtures any and all things. It additionally carries the hope that Obayashi Corporation will continue to develop without limitation.
Meanwhile, the upper part points sharply upward, showing the company’s attitude of constantly aiming for improvement as a dynamic current thinker that creates new value. The symbol was established in July 1990 with the introduction of the company’s corporate identity (CI).
