SURROGATE General-Purpose Remote Control Device Which Achieves Unmanned Operation of Construction Machinery Such as Backhoes

We have developed the SURROGATE General-Purpose Remote Control Device which achieves unmanned operation of construction machinery such as backhoes.

It realizes unmanned construction with detachable devices that do not require modification of construction machinery.
OBAYASHI CORPORATION and TAIYU Co., Ltd. (http://taiyu-corp.com/eng/) have jointly developed the SURROGATE General-Purpose Remote Control Device which achieves unmanned operation of construction machinery such as backhoes.

In recent years, natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons and localized heavy rain have been increasing in regions throughout Japan. In the initial stage of disaster recovery, there is a lot of work in dangerous places, and the risk of a secondary disaster is high, so unmanned construction using remote control of construction machinery, etc. is required, but the challenge to overcome is that procurement of conventional dedicated remote control construction machinery is difficult because it is expensive and there are few units available.
The SURROGATE that we have jointly developed is a low-cost and highly versatile remote control device which can be mounted on general construction machinery to enable unmanned construction. It is possible to switch between remote control and control on board with this device mounted, so it is possible to use it in different ways depending on the work environment and advance work quickly and flexibly at disaster recovery sites, etc.

The features of this device are as follows.

  1. Modification of construction machinery is unnecessary, and attachment to and detachment from general construction machinery is possible

    SURROGATE can be attached and detached easily without modifying general construction machinery. Remote control is possible simply by mounting this device on the operating lever, etc. next to the driver’s seat.
    The development of this product targets backhoes which have uniform control systems regardless of their make, so it can be applied to a variety of makes and models simply by changing the fastening hardware used for the mounting.

  2. It is possible to switch to control on board easily with the device still mounted

    Other detachable remote control devices were large devices which occupy the driver’s seat, but SURROGATE has a small structure which is mounted on the operating lever of the driver’s seat, so control on board is possible with this device still mounted.
    Furthermore, switching between remote control and control on board can be handled simply by attaching and detaching the pin of this device operating lever guide stay. The control can be switched with simple work which takes approximately three minutes, so the device can be used flexibly depending on the work environment. For example, remote control can be selected in dangerous places, and control on board, which offers highly efficient construction, can be used in comparatively safe places.

  3. Transportation and assembly are easy

    This device is divided into units in sizes that can be simply transported, and assembly is also easy. The mounting on the construction machinery consists only of bolting and the connection of wiring cables, so special tools and skills are unnecessary. We have simplified and reduced the weight of the mechanism by adopting an electric motor and electric cylinder system for the motive power.
