Obayashi Corporation Builds ORCISM™ Integrated Management and Control System to Support Crane Operation Safety and Productivity

Started verification for creating cranes that prevent dangerous work at newly established demonstration field

Technologies

As part of its aim to develop a crane that prevents dangerous work, Obayashi Corporation has built the Obayashi Robotics Crane Integrated System (ORCISM). The system offers safety support during operation as well as remote and automated operation capabilities; it utilizes digital twin(*1) technology including construction planning and operational simulation functions.

Obayashi recently established a demonstration field equipped with ORCISM in its East Japan Robotics Center in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, and will gradually progress technological development and system verification to improve the safety of crane operations, reduce labor required, and ultimately supplement skills and increase productivity.

ORCISM Features

ORCISM comprises the three functions required for crane work: crane machine guidance (operational support functions for ensuring safety), crane machine control (remote and automated operation functions that reduce labor required and supplement skills), and crane machine management (functions that improve productivity and ensure security). These three functions can be integrated and managed on a digital twin to detect any obstructions in the vicinity of a crane and issue alerts in the physical space. The digital twin can also consistently monitor a crane's load sway and decelerate or stop the machine in the physical space as necessary.

ORCISM Configuration

In addition, ORCISM can be coupled with various different technologies designed to prevent crane work accident. These include our Machine Guidance System that uses a digital twin to support safe and efficient crane operation, the SkyJuster™ device that controls the position of suspended loads, and Face-Starter™ technology that prevents unqualified personnel from operating construction machinery.

Demonstration Field Overview

The demonstration field at the East Japan Robotics Center has a remote control room for the remote, automated, and autonomous operation of two tower cranes in the 720 ton-meter (tm) class and 360 tm class used in large building construction. The tower cranes and their surrounding environments are also reproduced on digital twins.

These digital twin environments are not only real-time visualizations in cyberspace of the areas around the tower cranes, but also implement instructions and decisions made in cyberspace in real time in the physical space. Technologies for various purposes are being developed in this demonstration field, including improving safety, reducing labor required, supplementing operator skills, and enhancing productivity in crane operations.

Obayashi Corporation will continue to steadily promote the development of ORCISM in the demonstration field to create cranes that prevent dangerous work and help make construction work safer and more secure.
