Initiatives for Our Main Priorities

Global Environmental Responsibility

We provide solutions to global environmental issues by helping to build low-carbon, recycling-oriented,
sustainable societies that respect natural rhythms and resources.

Our group company, Ibaraki Green Co., Ltd., runs Old Orchard Golf Club in Ibaraki prefecture. Old Orchard Golf Club has established environment preservation council inviting local public offices and fisheries cooperative as a member. This council regularly monitors water quality of rivers around the golf club. They disclose the impact that golf club has made on the living creatures in the river.

We own woodland that have been certified as one of the top 100 corporate projects for biodiversity preservation on the grounds of the Obayashi Technical Research Institute. These woodlands are home to a large number of endangered Japanese kinran orchids. We hold annual viewing of the orchids inviting local nature conservation groups.

Disaster Readiness and Post-Disaster Reconstruction

We fulfill one of the core missions of a construction company by effectively utilizing our resources to ensure disaster readiness and to facilitate restoration and reconstruction after a disaster.

Kumamoto Castle, located in Kumamoto Prefecture, was damaged by the Kumamoto Earthquakes in April 2016. We performed an emergency construction project to prevent its five-story Iida Turret (Iidamaru Gokai Yagura) from collapsing. Supported only by a few stones in one corner, known as the "miraculous single stone pillar," the turret had fortunately escaped collapse. With the turret still on the brink of collapse, we accomplished the challenging project of positioning a "steel arm" made from bridge beam for temporary installation in the empty space under the turret. We are now working on restoration of the stone walls.

We have been working together with Tohoku University on an experiment in Iwanuma City, Miyagi Prefecture for removing the salt from farmlands left with salt damage by the tsunami in the Great East Japan Earthquake. In this experiment, we mix disaster-debris woodchips and soil remediation agents into the farmland, applying a technology that relies solely on rainwater and natural drainage to remove the salt. After launching the experiment in April 2012, we planted canola seeds in the soil in October. These seeds sprouted a full bloom of canola flowers in April 2013, proving the effectiveness of the technology.

Good Citizenship in Local Communities

We strive to be a responsible citizen of the communities where we operate. We listen to the voice of local residents, and make every effort to incorporate their wishes into our activities.

We support Obayashi Cup U-12 Soccer Festival in Kijimadaira by F.C. Tokyo as a special sponsor. The event not only enable players to improve their soccer skills and strengthen their teams, but also promoted children's mental health and physical development by enabling them to experience nature and interact with other teams.

We are operating Shimane Asahi Rehabilitation Program Center as our Public-private cooperation business. At this rehabilitation program center, we have introduced a guide dog puppy raising program with cooperation of the Japan Guide Dog Association and the ministry of justice.

Inspiration for the Next Generation

We convey the joy of craftsmanship in the construction industry to the young people who will be the leaders of tomorrow.

We hold tours at construction sites and the Obayashi Technical Research Institute in Kiyose City, Tokyo, for students, citizens, and other interested parties. Tours give participants a better understanding of construction by showing cutting-edge construction technology, the state of dynamic construction, and the real joy of building.

Our group company Naigai Technos holds woodworking classes for parents and children when the children are on summer vacation. Participants build chairs, despite having little or no experience handling tools like saws and hammers. Through the class, children learn how to use such tools and how much fun woodworking can be.
